President’s Message: February 2017

2017 certainly is off to a roaring start! There is so much going on in the world that is impacting our profession, as well as our organizations and clients, who need our insights and expertise more than ever.  As the leading association for public relations and communications professionals, PRSA Colorado is working to provide you – our members – with the knowledge and resources you need to advocate for the profession, achieve ethical and professional excellence, and drive your organization’s strategic outcomes.

Speaking of knowledge, resources and advocacy…

Many of you were able to join us in January for the timely “Real Talk on Fake News” panel with Kyle Clark from 9NEWS, Eric Lubbers from The Denver Post, Patricia Calhoun from Denver Westword and Diane Mulligan from M&C Communication, moderated by Lisa Cutter from Cutter Communications. This was a lively discussion in which the panelists offered their various perspectives, as well as ways that PR professionals can better work with journalists to ensure they have the right information.

Also, in case you missed it, PRSA took a stance last week on the use of “alternative facts” and advocated for honest and accurate communications, as well as ethical behavior.

    Achieving excellence…

For those of you seeking professional development and networking opportunities, we have quite the line-up for you in February with a Young Professionals happy hourspeed mentoring and networking in partnership with AMA Colorado, and a Master Practitioners’ event on the ever-evolving PR profession. See our newsletter and website for more information. I look forward to seeing you sometime this month!

If you know an exceptional PR leader or team (and there are so many hard-working, admirable PR pros out there!), we’re accepting nominations for the PRSA Colorado 2017 Special Awards. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to recognize someone who has gone above and beyond for their organization, community, colleagues, students, the chapter or the profession.

    Driving strategic outcomes…

Take a minute to reflect back on the outstanding work you did in 2016 because the Gold Picks call for entries is coming soon. Watch your email for more information on this and the Gold Picks award event on May 4.

We’re just getting started! We’re working hard behind the scenes to ensure we’re delivering value to you – our members. If you have questions or idea, please feel free to reach out to me or any PRSA Colorado board member anytime. And if you’d like to get involved, we are always looking for volunteers. Whether you have a lot of time or a little, we can find an opportunity for you.
