Committee Profile: Young Professionals, A Group Focused on ‘Building Networks

Wondering how to get the most out of your PRSA Colorado membership? Consider joining a chapter committee or targeted group. Involvement in the chapter is a great way to bolster your expertise, acquire new strategies and tactics, and gain visibility.

But how do you decide which committees or targeted groups best fit your needs? In a new blog series introduced in ENews, we will be profiling PRSA Colorado Chapter committees and groups to give you insight into what the chapter is doing and how you can get involved.

    First up: Young Pros.

The Young Professionals (YP or Young Pros) is a targeted group that serves communication specialists who are in the beginning or middle of their careers. Emily Smith, account manager at Fresh Ideas Group (FIG) and Kali Platt, account manager at Verde PR, lead the group. James Cullen, senior account executive at Ogilvy, is the board liaison for the group.

“Building your network is everything when you’re young in your career,” says Platt. “And, if you are new to the Denver area, a solid, accessible professional networking group is even more critical. The Young Pros gave me the confidence boost I needed to find a job, create a network and challenge myself with greater responsibility.”

The benefits of the Young Pros extend far past networking. The committee provides an environment that allows members to delve into PR discussions and practical applications they may not necessarily get to explore during their day jobs. Additionally, you can get wide-ranging, professional perspectives and advice from knowledgeable practitioners as the committee includes members who represent our profession in a number of fields.

The Young Pros also host a mix of formal events, such as workshops, and informal events, such as happy hours. And, there is always a focus on having fun.

For committee head, Emily Smith, one of her favorite YP events last year was Career+Beer.  Members met with PRSA Colorado Master Practitioners who provided resume feedback, career coaching and practice with mock interviews. A professional photographer was also on hand to offer affordable headshots. And, with the inclusion of a beer sponsor, the event was also a social occasion.
